A theme needs to be relative to the times and talks need to be curated to reflect upon the ideas to solve the problems of the present to ensure a better future. We need to ask ourselves the question, does something become the truth simply because it is believed by an overwhelming majority? Even if what is believed to be true contradicts existing fact and reality? From harmless everyday myths to profound logical fallacies, the motive of ‘Decoding Deceptions’ is to challenge the overwhelming tendency to participate in groupthink.
In the current global political climate, this theme has not resonated more with the minds of the youth. This theme is not meant to feature talks that are political or provocative but to address gross tendencies to believe false information, cognitive dissonance, freedom of speech, information processing, opinion formation, independent thinking, journalism in the era of social media, consensus reality, citizen journalism, and many more. Now more than ever, the youth are beginning to get acquainted with the liberties and freedoms of an individual and that it cannot be violated under any circumstances.
With the rapid progression of social media as the staple source of information, there is an increasing tendency to believe false and manipulated information, riddled with bias and sensationalism. As the youth come out to form opinions and perspectives without an element of coercion, ’Decoding Deceptions’ attempts to equip them with the right tools to seek truth and fact.
