Breaking Through Inhibitions

What is inhibition? Inhibition is that feeling that makes one self-conscious and unable to act in a relaxed and natural way. It is that nervous feeling that prevents you from expressing your thoughts, emotions, or desires.

When we were children, we had no inhibitions. Our spontaneity was a result of not having any inhibition responses (fears) conditioned into us to block our neuropathways. Intimidations and invalidations from others are the primary ways these inhibitions were implanted.

Inhibitions prevent the free flowing of life. The more inhibited (invalidated) we were as children, the less expressive, creative, and productive we will become as adults.

We are all born with this incredible gift, the gift of imagination. But as we get older, we are told what is and isn't possible, what we can and can't do. As a result the imagination that once fuelled are existence becomes extinguished.

As we get older we become more subjected to these social and perceived limitations through the media. Whether it be the news, reality shows, internet, or social media, all of these different portals of information can lead us down a path of limited belief in ourselves. We end up suppressing our true abilities because we develop this fear of judgement.

These self-limiting behaviours have no positive side; contrary to what many assume, they rarely save us from doing things we'll later regret. In fact, studies found that, in the long run, people most often regret the things they failed to try, rather than the things they bombed at. Trying yields either success or an opportunity to learn; not trying has no positive result.

Inhibition robs one of the confidence needed to form real bonds with people. It limits you from opening up and sharing with people. Due to the feeling of anxiety inhibition creates, it restricts the expression of emotions that prevents people from forming true bonds.

It is an unfortunate fact that in numerous cases in life, the only thing holding people back is themselves. The fear of failure, fear of judgement, lack of self confidence, etc. are just some of the many reasons that people develop inhibitions. Being true to who you are and exuding self confidence are the keys to breaking through one's inhibitions.

We need to recognize and face our inhibitions, thereby helping ourselves live happier and more fulfilled lives. Vaulting well past the limits of our inhibitions will provide us with immense satisfaction. As Walt Whitman once said, " Forsake all inhibitions, Pursue thy dreams."
